Chapter 45 - Chapter 45 : The Lycanthrope attack

Brian, still catching his breath, replied, "I've been tracking it for days. I found clues in old texts about its weaknesses. We need to be prepared. This was just a skirmish."

---

Despite the temporary respite, the packs soon discovered that their troubles were far from over. The Lycanthrope attacks continued, becoming even more ferocious and coordinated. It became clear that there wasn't just one creature; there were many, and they were being led by an unseen alpha.

Marinetta, Harley, Reed, and Silas gathered once more to strategize. "We need to find their leader," Silas stated, his tone resolute. "Without the alpha, they'll be less organized and easier to defeat."

Brian nodded. "I've seen patterns in their attacks. They're being directed strategically. We need to lure the alpha out and take it down."

---

The packs decided to set a trap. They chose a location near the edge of their territory, a place that had been frequently attacked. Marinetta, Harley, Reed, Silas, and Brian armed themselves with Wolfsbane-infused weapons and positioned themselves strategically.

The night was tense as they waited. The silence was almost deafening until it was shattered by the sound of snarls and growls. The Lycanthropes appeared, their eyes glowing with a malevolent hunger. The battle began in earnest, with the pack members fighting valiantly.

Marinetta fought beside Harley, their movements synchronized. She caught a glimpse of Brian engaging several Lycanthropes at once, his silver-tipped spear flashing in the moonlight. Reed and Silas held their ground, their strength and coordination driving back the attackers.

Suddenly, a chilling howl echoed through the forest. The Lycanthropes paused, their attention drawn to the sound. Emerging from the shadows was the alpha—a massive, imposing creature with eyes that seemed to pierce the very soul.

Brian shouted, "There it is! Focus on the alpha!"

The pack members rallied, directing their attacks toward the alpha. The creature was incredibly strong and fast, its movements almost a blur. It seemed impervious to their weapons, shrugging off blows that would have felled any ordinary Lycanthrope.

Marinetta and Harley advanced on the alpha together. As they fought, Marinetta realized that the creature was avoiding certain areas where they had laid Wolfsbane traps. "It's avoiding the Wolfsbane!" she shouted to the others. "Use it to our advantage!"

The pack members adjusted their tactics, driving the alpha toward the traps. The creature became more aggressive, sensing the danger. Marinetta, with a burst of determination, managed to land a critical blow with her Wolfsbane-infused blade. The alpha howled in pain, its movements becoming erratic.

Brian saw an opening and hurled his silver-tipped spear with all his might. The weapon struck the alpha in the heart, the Wolfsbane taking immediate effect. The creature let out a final, deafening roar before collapsing to the ground.

Brian quickly approached the fallen alpha, pulling back the mask that covered its face. His heart sank as he recognized the features beneath. "It's... it's Mia," he whispered, barely able to comprehend what he was seeing.

Marinetta, nearby, gasped. "My mother?"

Before they could fully process the revelation, the alpha's wounds began to heal rapidly. With a sudden, powerful surge, the creature sprang to its feet and bolted into the forest. Brian and the others gave chase, but they were quickly intercepted by the remaining Lycanthropes, fighting desperately to protect their leader.

"We have to get through!" Brian shouted, his desperation fueling his attacks. But the pack was relentless, their coordination and ferocity making it impossible to break through.

"Retreat!" Reed ordered, realizing the danger of being surrounded. "We need to regroup!"

Reluctantly, the group fell back, their path to the alpha blocked by the relentless Lycanthropes. As they retreated to a safer distance, Brian turned to the others, his face a mix of shock and determination. "That was Mia. Marinetta's mother."

"How is that possible?" Silas asked, disbelief evident in his voice. "I thought she was dead."

Brian shook his head. "I don't know, but we have to find out. If she's alive and leading these creatures, there's more at play here than we realized."

Marinetta was stunned, struggling to process the idea that her mother was not only alive but also their enemy. "Why wouldn't she have come back to me?" she murmured, tears welling up in her eyes. "Why would she lead these attacks?"

"We need answers," Reed said firmly. "But right now, we need to recover and plan our next move. We can't let the pack suffer more losses."

As they made their way back to their territory, the weight of their discovery hung heavily over them. The immediate threat of the Lycanthropes had been pushed back, but the revelation about Mia added a new layer of complexity to their struggle.

Once they returned to the safety of their territory, Brian gathered everyone. "We need to figure out how Mia became the alpha of these creatures. There has to be a reason, something we're missing."

Maranda, who had been tending to the wounded, approached them. "There are old texts that mention powerful spells and rituals that can transform werewolves. If Mia was subjected to something like that, it could explain her condition."

Marinetta, still reeling from the encounter, stepped forward. "I want to help. Whatever it takes, we need to bring her back. If there's a way to save her, we have to find it."

Reed nodded in agreement. "We'll start researching immediately. We need to understand what we're dealing with and how to counter it."

Silas, looking determined, added, "And we need to strengthen our defenses. The Lycanthropes will come back, and next time, they might be even stronger."

The packs, united by their shared goal, began preparing for the challenges ahead. They knew that finding Mia and uncovering the truth about her transformation was crucial, not just for their safety, but for Marinetta and the future of all their packs.
