Chapter 16 - Questions and Explanations

Omni POV

As Motohama carefully packed his belongings, a sense of finality hung in the air. The room, once filled with the familiar comforts of his life, now echoed with the hollowness of departure. Every item he stowed away held a memory, a piece of the life he was leaving behind forever.

Meanwhile, Matsuda, now awake and in a different part of the city, was going through a similar ritual. He carefully folded his clothes, packed his books, and boxed up his belongings. The decision to leave his house, his sanctuary, weighed heavily on him. Each item he placed into a box felt like a step into an uncertain future.

'For a better future.'

As the two men finished packing, they received a message from Regis, a mysterious figure who had entered their lives with promises of an otherworldly existence. Regis had cryptically explained the supernatural world to them, revealing secrets that had remained hidden from ordinary eyes.

With their bags in tow, Motohama and Matsuda set out to follow Regis. The cityscape blurred outside the windows as they navigated the streets, their minds spinning with a mix of anticipation and trepidation.

"So... you are finally here."

"Let's go."

"Yes, Boss/Lord."

The city at night was a canvas painted in hues of darkness, illuminated only by the soft glow of streetlights and the occasional neon signs that flickered in the distance. Motohama, Matsuda, and Regis walked in a tight formation, their silhouettes cast against the dimly lit backdrop of towering buildings and empty streets.

Motohama, with his bag slung over his shoulder, took measured steps, his gaze shifting between the shadows and the mysterious figure leading the way. His face reflected a mix of determination and uncertainty, as if he were navigating a path between the known and the unknown.

Matsuda, carrying his packed belongings, walked with a thoughtful demeanor. His eyes scanned the surroundings, absorbing the details of the nocturnal cityscape. The weight of leaving behind his familiar life lingered in his expressions, and the night seemed to amplify the gravity of his decision.

Regis, the enigmatic guide, moved with a confident stride. His silhouette seemed to meld with the shadows, and his presence exuded an air of mystique and royalty.

The city's soundtrack was a symphony of distant traffic, occasional footsteps, and the rustling of leaves in the quiet corners of the urban landscape. The trio's journey unfolded against this backdrop, each step echoing in the stillness of the night.

Occasionally, they passed by pockets of activity—a late-night café with a solitary figure hunched over a laptop, a group of revelers spilling out of a dimly lit bar. Yet, their path seemed to lead them away from the familiar and into the mysterious heart of the city, where secrets awaited in the shadows and the night held its own secrets.

"Ask what you want..."

"I have already put up a silence barrier."

"Oh...mmm... Why us, Boss?" Asked with uncertainty, Motohama.

"A feeling..."

"A feeling?"

"Yeah, I thought you had potential."

Regis stopped for a moment and looked at Motohama and Matsuda in the eyes.

"But it seems I underestimated your potentials. You have more potential than I have ever imagined."

"One question, Lord."

"Just ask."

"Why were your clothes thrown, and were you in a crater?"

"My family was attacked. I was injured by the hand of a madman, though I have no doubt that there is some backhand in this matter... Anyway, he tortured me for a bit, and then he tried to escape..."

"But my father's knight had blocked him, and I disturbed him when he was chanting a teleportation spell, which led us to both falling through the sky."

Regis then looked at his hand as he ignited it, and a yellow/golden flame burned in it.

"Fortunately, my heritage awakened... albeit late, but better late than sorry, I guess," Regis responded while shrugging a little.

"Ohh... oh."

"Sorry, Boss."

"Sorry for asking, Lord."

"Doesn't matter. Sooner or later, vengeance will be mine."

"What do the pieces do, and why were they invented?"

"Good question, Motohama. Both of you listen well:

The chess pieces are part of a supernatural system within the devil side called the "Evil Pieces System," which is used by devils to reincarnate humans into devils, creating a peerage of servants. Each chess piece corresponds to a specific role and grants its user distinct powers. Here is an overview of the chess pieces and their powers:

Pawn:

Power: Pawns are the basic chess pieces and serve as the main force in a devil's peerage. They have balanced abilities, with the potential for growth and promotion.

Knight:

Power: Knights are known for their exceptional speed and agility. They often act as scouts and are adept at hit-and-run tactics.

Rook:

Power: Rooks are the heavy-hitters, possessing immense strength and endurance. They are typically used for frontline combat and defense.

Bishop:

Power: Bishops are associated with magical abilities and serve as long-range attackers. They are skilled in using various magical spells.

Queen:

Power: The Queen is a unique piece with a combination of the abilities of Rooks, Bishops, and Knights. They are powerful all-around fighters and are often the strongest members of a peerage.

King:

Power: The King is the leader of the peerage and possesses enhanced demonic power. If the King is defeated in combat, the entire peerage is considered defeated.

Mutation Pieces (unused in Rating Game):

Power: These are special pieces that don't conform to the traditional chess roles. Their abilities can vary widely and are often unique to the individual.

The Evil Pieces System was developed by the devils as a means to increase their numbers and strengthen their ranks. There are several reasons behind the creation of the Evil Pieces in my opinion:

Population Growth and Power Balance:

Devils have their own society and hierarchies, and they needed a way to increase their population to maintain their power and influence in the supernatural world. The Evil Pieces System allows devils to reincarnate humans into devils, creating a new generation of demonic beings. As the devils do not have a high birth rate compared to other races.

Reincarnation of Strong Souls:

The system enables devils to select and reincarnate strong and talented individuals who have died, ensuring that the devil society is populated with individuals possessing exceptional abilities, skills, and potential for growth.

Formation of Peerages:

The Evil Pieces System organizes devils into peerages, each led by a high-ranking devil known as a King. This structure facilitates strategic battles in the form of Rating Games, where devil teams compete against each other. Peerages contribute to the overall power balance and competition within the devil society.

Strategic Warfare:

The creation of peerages and the use of Evil Pieces add a strategic element to the series. The Rating Games, which involve tactical combat between devil teams, become a way for devils to resolve conflicts, showcase their strength, and vie for power and influence.

"And that is basically an introduction to the supernatural; later, I will explain more."

"Finally, we have arrived."

"Huh/Eh?"

In front of them was a tall and luxurious building.

"Let's check in, and I will continue to explain more in the room."
