Chapter 106 - Monster Inquiry

The Adventurer talking to Pana left and Vivian stepped forward.

"Hi," Vivian said and smiled.

A surprised expression flashed across Pana's face.

"Vivian, I didn't expect to see you here. It's been a while since I've seen you during this time of the day."

"Yeah."

"So what can I do for you?"

"I'm planning to go explore a little deeper in the forest around this city and I want to know what kind of dangerous monsters I can encounter."

Pana nodded.

"I understand."

She took out a large book underneath the counter and began flipping pages. A few moments later, she turned the book towards Vivian.

"There are common and special monsters. I'll give you the common first."

"Okay."

"For the common monsters, we have Treebark, Bukaroo, Sunkiss, Yellow Wako, Jupper, Paparu, Brown Kraine, Black Ekan, Green Ekan and White Ekan."

"Hold on, can you show me the pictures of each just so I know which is which?"

"Of course."

Pana flipped a page and it featured a sketch of a monster.

"This one here is the Treebark," she said and then began explaining more details.

The Treebark was none other than the tree monster that Vivian would refer as the "Trunk Monster"

Pana flipped another page.

"This one here is the Bukaroo…" she said and then began explaining more details.

She continued flipping pages and explaining each monster.

The Sunkiss was the sunflower monster that could cough out an orange gas which had a similar effect to pepper spray.

The Yellow Wako was basically the long-eared fox.

The Jupper was the tiny jumping mushroom that travels in groups and attacks a target by doing a jumping attack and causes an itch if the attack makes contact with the skin.

The Paparu was a horned rabbit. The horn on its forehead was similar to a seashell and can grow up to 15 inches long.

The Brown Kraine was the wolf-like creature that Vivian encountered yesterday.

The Black Ekan was a black-colored snake that could grow up to 20ft.

The Green Ekan was basically just a Black Ekan. The only difference is that it's color green and can inject venom through its fangs that causes poison.

The Brown Ekan is also similar to the Black and Green Ekan. The only difference is that it's color brown and can inject venom that causes paralysis.

"I see," Vivian said and nodded. "What about the special monsters?"

"Hold on for a moment," Pana said beofre turning the book back towards her and then flipping through the pages.

A couple of seconds later, she stopped and turned back the book towards Vivian.

"The first one, we have the monster called White Lady…" she said and then began explaining.

The White Lady was a soul-type creature or monster in the form of a woman's silhouette dressed in white and only appears at night or in dark places. It's completely immune to physical attacks and its touch can drain mana. To kill it, one has to hit it with Magic Arts or any weapon that has Elemental enchantments. And lastly, the dwelling place of this type of monster isn't to forests alone. They can be found in any place.

The second special monsters was Black Lady. It's basically a White Lady. The only difference is that it's dressed in black and its touch can not only drain mana but also drain life force which could kill a target.

The third special monster was the Puffer. Just like the first two, it only appears at night or in dark places. This monster isn't exactly "hostile" in a traditional sense, instead, it's a rather playful one.

It will cast a spell that traps the target in an endless maze. If the target's Magic Force is lower compared to the Puffer, the target will be affected by the spell. Meanwhile, if the target's Magic Force is higher, they won't be affected by the Puffer's spell.

And in case a person gets affected by its spell, there are only two ways to escape the endless maze: Locate and kill the Puffer or wear all of your clothes invertedly.

As for its dwelling place, it's not limited to forests, specifically on large tress. It can be found on abandoned ruins or in caves.

Pana flipped the page one last time.

"And for the last or final special monster that can be found in the forest surrounding the city, it's the Peon.

"This is a humanoid-type monster that has both male and female genders, its skin color is green, and the highest height it can reach was 4ft.

"It only has a quarter of human intelligence, but don't let that fool you. Not only can they use weapons, but they also have access to Physical and Magic Arts like humans.

"They also have their own language but it's 50% grunts and noises and the other 50% are gestures.

"These creatures prefer to live in a nomadic tribal or herd-like way of life, moving from place to place. But if they do decide to settle down, they usually stay in caves or abandoned ruins.

"And lastly, due to them only having a quarter of human intelligence, any form of co-existence or friendly dialogue with them is impossible. They will kill and eat anything in sight that doesn't look like them."

Vivian's eyes narrowed as she stared at the drawing that Pana was pointing.

Isn't this a goblin…?

No…

It's too thick…

If she were to describe the what a Peon looked like, it was a cross-combination of a goblin and a dwarf -- it had the appearance of a goblin, but the thickness of a dwarf.

"But don't worry, to encounter a Peon, let alone a group of Peons, in the forest surrounding the city is very rare," Pana said with a reassuring tone. "But in other places where they're common, they aren't classified as a special monster. As a matter of fact, there's a Special Quest for Gold Rank Adventurers to hunt them at the Luminous Ruins. Because once they become too many, they would try to expand their territory and kill and eat anything that they consider their territory."

"You mentioned that there are male and female Peon. I'm just wondering, do they 'touch' female humans?"

Pana shook her head.

"I have never encountered a report of a Peon touching female humans. However, some of the veteran Adventurers have told me that Peons prefer to target human children. They would take them to their nest -- if they have a base or lair -- and then do only the Elemental Gods know what."

"I see. So these are just the monsters I can encounter in the forest?"

"Yes. But if you go even further, you will start to encounter more diverse monsters."

"These Peons. You said that they can use Magic. What kind of Magic Arts do they use?"

"All Magic Art Affinities. But when it comes to the number of Magic Art Affinities they possess, that I'm not sure. First, no one, including scholars from the Temple of Wizards, have conducted a proper and detailed study on the Magic Art Affinities Peons. And secondly, Peons don't go around paying for Awakening Ceremonies."

"Right."

"Exactly."

"You said that they have access to Physical Arts. Does this mean they carry weapons?"

"Yes, but it's usually just sticks and rocks. And if they're able to obtain weapons from humans, it won't last long because they don't have the concept of blacksmithing and would break it through the use of Physical Arts."

Hmm…

So selling their weapons is out of the picture…

"What about Class Magic?"

Pana shook her head.

"I've never heard of a Peon getting a Class. But…" she said and paused for a moment. "But I guess if they have access to a Mother Crystal Class, they might."

Vivian raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

"I don't know. Like I said, I've never heard of a Peon getting a Class. But since they can use Physical and Magic Arts, they might be able to -- that's what I like to think."

Vivian nodded.

"I see. Thanks, but I have to go."

Pana let out a smile.

"No problem, I'm always happy to help."

Vivian turned away and went to the Quest Processing counter.
