In a dimly lit hallway adjacent, Archbishop Henry strode purposefully, his mind racing. He was thinking about the next phase in their strategy when he observed a figure gliding gracefully down the corridor. Lady Ophelia, the king's childhood friend, was approaching him. Henry was fully aware that Ophelia had affections for Baldwin, a fact she had long kept secret but which had not missed his astute observation.

A slow, calculated smile spread across Henry's face. Here was an opportunity, an unanticipated yet perfect piece in his game. Lady Ophelia, a young widow and confidante to the king, could be easily swayed by her long-standing affection for Baldwin. If Philippa were to die, Henry reasoned, Ophelia could serve as a suitable queen—a quiet, loyal woman who would be easily influenced. More importantly, she could be molded to support his own interests within the kingdom.
