By the time Kayden finally woke up, it was well into the evening, the sun already starting to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden hue across his room. Though he would never admit it out loud, the sleep had been exactly what he needed. He felt incredibly well-rested and energized, which was a bit annoying considering how much he valued his independence. Still, he couldn't deny that he was grateful Bryson had convinced Kayla to make him rest.
There was a soft knock on the door.
"Yes, come in," his voice came out groggy from sleep, a rough edge to it that hinted at how deeply he had been sleeping. The door creaked open, and Kayla walked in, a small smile playing on her lips.
"It's good that you're awake; if not, I would have had to come in and wake you myself," she teased lightly.
Kayden returned her smile with a hint of gratitude. "Good evening, Kayla."
