"I don't know anyone by that name." I lie.
Penelope laughs at my blatant lie.
"Don't try to fool me. I know you are somehow related to the woman that haunts my marriage. Yule is mine, and I won't let a rotten corpse come between us again!" Her voice quivers with a mix of anger and fear.
Penelope's face turns beet red from her overwhelming anxiety.
I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do here. This isn't something I expected. This family has far more issues than one would assume.
"Why are you asking me? Strange that you would ask me, an outsider, about it. Isn't it only reasonable to talk to your husband about it if it's a concern?" I say, hoping to appeal to her reason.
"If it were that simple, I would have. Senna's name is enough to make him ignore me. The topic is all but guaranteed to cause him to shut down. How could I possibly talk to him when he is like that?" Penelope's initial anger slowly transforms into a deep, isolating sadness.
