At one in the morning, when he entered her room, Emma Benson had already been fast asleep. He had just lain down on the bed and hadn't even had the chance to hold her when she began undressing herself.
There was no light on in the room, and visibility wasn't clear. Walter Schmidt thought she was awake and was surprised by her initiative. It was only after he flipped her over and pinned her down that he realized her eyes were closed and she was actually sleepwalking.
Walter Schmidt propped himself up and turned on the bedside lamp, watching as the woman slid the straps of her nightgown down her shoulders.
Then, as she started to take off more, Walter Schmidt couldn't help but place a hand on her to stop her movements, his lips curved into a self-mockery smile, because if he allowed her to continue, he wasn't sure what he might do next.
