Chapter 7: LIFE ON THE LINE!! TO LIVE IS TO DIE!!
Lee lets out a sigh and dashes toward the Gorilla—one of the strongest, if not the most powerful, mutated walkers ever seen. The monstrous walker charges him head-on. Klaus reloads his gun and opens fire.
Lee evades the attack and hides behind a tree. Alice tosses more grenades, but they do minimal damage to the beast. Klaus runs over to Lee's position.
Klaus:
We need a plan, Lee.
Lee:
I agree. If this keeps up, we're all gonna die.
Klaus:
Alice can't do much in a fight… not yet. No matter how smart she is.
Lee:
The Bolts are one thing… but to think this so-called Gorilla is that powerful?
Klaus:
And we can't forget about the others—those who got bitten and turned. So we've got three problems: mutated walkers, regular walkers, and the Gorilla.
Lee:
I've got an idea. Let Alice take care of the regular walkers while we deal with the big guy.
Klaus:
That sounds good. But what about the Bolts?
Lee:
You can handle them.
Klaus:
Wait… you want to take on the Gorilla alone?
Lee:
That's the idea. Look, we've got three major threats—the regulars, the Bolts, and the Gorilla. Alice isn't strong enough to deal with the mutated ones. That leaves just you and me. You know more about the Bolts than I do, so you take them. I'll handle the Gorilla.
Klaus:
I understand… just don't die.
Lee:
I won't.
Klaus runs back over to Alice and explains the plan. At first, she hesitates, not wanting to leave them behind. But Klaus convinces her it's the only option.
Lee closes his eyes, remembering Clementine. He exhales deeply and rises from behind the tree.
He sprints toward the Gorilla walker, drawing the sword Alice had given him. Several regular walkers appear in his path. With swift strikes, he decapitates them and continues toward the monstrous threat.
Klaus, meanwhile, dashes toward the Bolt walkers, opening fire. But their speed is incredible—fast enough to dodge several bullets. Klaus bites his lip in frustration.
Suddenly, one of the Bolts gets behind him and sinks its teeth into his neck.
Klaus:
Aghhh!!
Alice:
Brother!!
Alice hears his scream. She looks over and sees Klaus being overwhelmed. In a panic, she hurls a grenade at the Bolt.
Klaus manages to shoot it in the face and escapes just before the grenade explodes. He drops to his knees, gripping his bleeding neck.
Alice:
Brother… are you alright?!
Klaus:
What do you think?
Alice:
Did you get bit?
Klaus:
Yeah...
Alice's eyes fill with tears.
Klaus:
I'll be okay...
He wipes her cheeks and gives her a soft pat on the head.
Klaus:
No matter how old we get, you'll always be my cheeky little sister.
Alice smiles through the tears and hugs him tightly.
Meanwhile, Lee fights the Gorilla walker with all his might—but nothing seems to bring it down. He strikes at its head, but it's too tough to be split open.
Lee:
If this keeps up any longer… I might actually die.
Alice (over comms):
Lee! Klaus has been bitten!
Lee:
What?!
Alice:
I think I know a way to save him… but we have to take this thing down first!
Lee nods. He and Alice charge the Gorilla walker together, but their attacks do little to harm it. Then—BAM!—the Gorilla lands a devastating blow to Lee's face, sending him flying toward the Bolts.
As Lee begins to lose consciousness, memories flood back…
FLASHBACK
Lee wakes up inside the RV Kenny had fixed.
Clementine:
Lee… will Duck be okay?
Lee:
Sure he will, sweet pea.
Clementine:
Will you ever leave me?
Lee:
Sweet pea… I'll never leave you.
Clementine:
Pinky promise?
Lee:
Pinky promise.
Clementine:
I'm gonna take a nap.
Lee:
Me too.
END OF FLASHBACK
Lee's eyes flutter shut... until he hears a voice calling to him.
He opens them to see Alice standing over him.
Alice:
Lee, are you okay?
Lee:
I think my ribs are broken...
Alice:
Can you stand?
Lee:
Yeah. Alice—you said my robotic arm could break through walls, right?
Alice:
Yes… I think it can.
Lee:
Okay. Stay back. Watch my back for me. I'm taking this thing down now.
Alice:
Be careful, Lee.
Lee clenches his fist, grits his teeth, and charges toward the monster.
Lee:
TO LIVE IS TO DIE… AND TO DIE IS TO LIVE!!!
