Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Final Confrontation

The old mansion loomed before them, its windows dark and foreboding. Grey felt a chill run down his spine as they approached. The air was thick with the stench of decay and something else, something malevolent.

Harker led the way, a cross in one hand and a wooden stake in the other. Grey followed, his revolver at the ready. They moved silently through the darkened halls, every creak of the floorboards sending shivers down their spines.

At last, they reached the basement. The door was heavy and reinforced, but Harker managed to force it open. Inside, the air was even colder, and Grey could see his breath in the dim light of his lantern.

There, in the corner, lay a coffin. It was ornate and ancient, covered in strange symbols. Harker approached it cautiously, his face set in grim determination.

"Ready yourself, Inspector," he whispered.

With a swift motion, Harker threw open the lid of the coffin. Inside lay the creature, its eyes closed in a mockery of sleep. But as the light touched its pale skin, its eyes snapped open, burning with a fierce, red glow.

The vampire lunged, faster than Grey could react. But Harker was ready. He thrust the cross forward, and the creature recoiled with a hiss of pain. Grey raised his revolver and fired, the bullets striking true but having little effect.

"Now, Inspector!" Harker shouted.

Grey steeled himself and drove the stake into the vampire's heart. The creature screamed, a sound that echoed through the halls like the wail of a thousand tortured souls. Its body convulsed, then lay still.

The Red-Eyed Demon was no more.
